Year two of the Crinan Winter Works programme is now underway, and Scottish Canals have been able to transport four pairs of lock gates from Ardrishaig to Crinan via the canal, utilising water-based machinery.
The framework contractor, Mackenzie Construction, have completed their site set-up at lock 10 (for the Dunardry works at locks 12 and 13), and at Crinan. Hardstanding for cranes is now in place at locks 12 and 13 and the site set up at Cairnbaan is almost complete. Scottish Canals have ensured the site cabins at Crinan and Cairnbaan are hard-wired into the electricity network, removing the need to run generators throughout the day and night and minimising noise disruption.
The Crinan car park will remain closed throughout the winter period to help facilitate the works. Scottish Canals apologise for the inconvenience this causes and look to open back up as soon as we are able.
When the canal level has dropped sufficiently, we will carry out a fish rescue. This is currently planned for Monday 17th October.
After careful consideration regarding the impact of the work, we have chosen to delay the replacement of the lock 15 gates; this will help limit the local disruption. We now intend to install the new gates next year, subject to available funding.
